The steep sided Borrowdale Valley extends some 10 miles from its source high in the Scafell Mountains down to the shores of Derwentwater in the Northern Lakes and must be one of the most beautiful landscapes in the British Isles.

Derwentwater itself is ringed by road and footpaths both along the shores and at higher levels, and despite its popularity amongst water sports lovers, the lake always stays peaceful. There is a regular launch service around the lake and is an excellent way to explore the lower valley.

To the south beyond the village of Grange with its double arched bridge dating from 1675 and pretty cottages the wooded valley narrows. Here you will find beautiful riverside walks before opening out into rich pasture land with a cross patch of dry stone walls. At the head of the valley there is Rosthwaite, Stonethwaite, Seathwaite and Seatoller, favourites of walkers and climbers who venture into the dramatic hills and mountains that encircle this area.
